What is a communicable disease?
A disease that is infectious.

What are microorganisms that cause disease called?
Pathogens.
Name four types of pathogen.
Bacteria, viruses, fungi, protists.
How do bacteria cause disease in humans?
By rapidly reproducing between the cells of our body and releasing toxins.
How do viruses cause disease in humans?
By infecting and entering our cells, rapidly producing in our cells and then bursting our cells as they leave to infect more.
What is the splitting of bacteria into two called?
Binary fission.
Name three ways pathogens are spread.
By air, direct contact and water.
What temp are bacteria incubated at in schools and colleges?
25°.
How do you calculate the number of bacteria in a population?
Bacteria at the beginning of the growth period x 2 (squared by number of divisions)
Name two ways to stop bacterial growth.
Keeping them at a lower temp or using chemicals.
How to find area of a circle?
Pie x radius (squared).
Name 4 ways to prevent spread of pathogens.
Hand washing, using disinfectant, keeping raw meat away from food that will be eaten uncooked, coughing or sneezing carefully.
What is a vector?
Something that carries a communicable disease.
What happens during vaccination?
Doctors introduce a small amount of a harmless form of a specific pathogen into your body.
Name 2 symptoms of measles.
Fever and a red skin rash.
How is measles spread?
By the inhalation of droplets from coughs and sneezes.
What does measles cause?
Blindness and brain damage (it may be fatal).
Is there a treatment for measles?
No.
Is there a vaccination for measles?
Yes, the MMR vaccine.
What are the symptoms of HIV?
A mild flu-like illness.
What does HIV do?
It attacks the immune cells and hides until the immune system is so badly damaged that it can no longer deal with infections or certain cancers.
