B9: Respiration💨 Flashcards
What happens during aerobic respiration?
Glucose reacts with oxygen
What are the waste products of aerobic respiration?
Carbon dioxide and water
Is aerobic respiration exo or endothermic?
Exothermic
What is the BALANCED symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O
Where does aerobic respiration happen in the cell?
Mitochondria
What is aerobic respiration used for?
Making new cell material
Making muscles contract
Maintaining internal body temperature
What do muscles store glucose as?
Glycogen
What is glycogen?
A carbohydrate that can be rapidly converted back into glucose
What is your body’s response to exercise?
Increased heart rate, increased breathing rate and glycogen is converted back into glucose
What happens during anaerobic respiration?
Glucose is converted into lactic acid
How is oxygen debt created?
A build up of lactic acid in your muscles as a result of anaerobic respiration.
What is oxygen debt?
The amount of oxygen needed to convert lactic acids into glucose
What are the products of anaerobic respiration in plants?
Ethanol and carbon dioxide
Name 3 examples of metabolic reactions
Respiration
Photosynthesis
Conversion of glucose
Name 3 roles of the liver
Detoxifying toxic substances (eg ethanol)
Passing the breakdown of products into the blood so they can be excreted
Sorting iron from broken down red blood cells to synthesise more blood cells
