Q
Name three modern farming techniques
A
- fish farming
- glasshouses
- hydroponics
2
Q
Explain fish framing + advantages and disadvntages
A
Fish bred and reared in large cages in rivers or the sea
Advantages:
- easy to catch
- cheaper
- less predators
- less need to fish wild stock, numbers can recover
Disadvantages
-fish close together, diseases can spread quickly
3
Q
Explain glasshouses + advantages
A
Structure where plants can be grown under controlled conditions
Advantages:
- manipulate environment, grow crops all year
- disease can be treated/controlled
- pesticides + fertilsers kept inside, do not escape into environment
- can be placed all round UK, do not need to import from abroad
4

Expalin hydroponics + advantages and disadvantages
A
Growing plants in greenhouses without soil. Their roots are sprayed with a solution that contains the minerals they need.
Advantages:
- can be grown in areas with poor soil
- better use of space
- water recycled, reduces waste
Disadvantages
- plant is not supported at the roots- tray/frame needed
- fertilisers needed to be added constantly because no soil
