B4.1 Sampling Techniques Flashcards
1
Q
What is it called when scientists record the location of organsims of one species?
A
Distribution
2
Q
What is it called when they record the number of organisms of a particular species in an area?
A
Population
3
Q
What is it called when differenet populations live in one area together?
A
Community
4
Q
To collecet information biologists need technqiues to…
A
- collect organsims
- count the number of organisms in each species
- record where the organisms are found
- collect accurate data
- collect the data fairly
- collect reliable data
5
Q
Explain sampling techniques
A
- Quadrats (sqaure frames) put on ground. Number of organisms in frame are then counted
- Transect lines (tapes laid across an environment). Count number of organisms along the tape (plants) to study distribution.
- Nets used to catch animals (butterflies/fish) allowing to count and record the distribution
- Pooters (containers with a straw device) used to suck small animals (can be identified and counted)
- Pitfall traps (small containers) buried in the ground which collect small animals, allowing to sample.
6
Q
How can you estimate population size?
A
Number is first sample x number in second sample
_______________________________________________________
Number in second sample previously marked
7
Q
When estimating the size of population, what do biologists assume?
A
- No death
- No immigration/ emigration
- Used sams sampling method
- Marking or organisms does not affect their survival
Ensured population estimates are accurate as possible
