B4.1 Flashcards
Adaptation to environment
What is a habitat?
where a species lives
What is a population?
a group of individuals of the same species
What is a community?
all the populations of different species living together and interacting with each other
What is a niche?
a complete description of when where and how a species lives
What is an ecosystem?
an interaction between communities and their abiotic environment
What does biotic and abiotic mean?
biotic- the living part of an ecosystem
abiotic- the non-living part, rocks, water, light, air
What is the environment?
the external surroundings that act on an organism, population or community, influencing survival and development
What is a xerophyte?
a plant able to survive in an environment with little water
What is a microhabitat?
a really small habitat (insects in the bark of a tree)
What are some limiting biotic factors?
competition or predation
What are some limiting abiotic factors?
temperature, ph, salinity, oxygen, carbon dioxide, rainfall, humidity
What is tolerance?
the critical minimum and maximum of a species within which an organism can survive.
What are the conditions required for coral reef formation?
between tropics of cancer and capricorn
warm seas with strong sunlight
water between 23 and 29 degrees celcius
relatively shallow depth
What is a climograph?
a graphical model that shows the relationship between temperature, precipitation and ecosystem type
What is a biome?
groups of ecosystems that share similar abiotic conditions
