B4 - The Circlatory System Flashcards
What is a tissue? Name an example
Group of cells with a similar structure and function. An example could be muscle tissue
What is an organ and what are they grouped into? Also name an example
An organ is a group of tissues working for a specific function for example the stomach containing muscle tissue. They are grouped into organ systems
What are the red blood cells? Explain the shape structure and function.
The red blood cells are biconcave in shape allowing a larger surface area to absorb oxygen
They don’t have a nucleus to allow more room to carry oxygen
Name 3 things the plasma transports around the body
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Soluble digestion products from small intestine to other organs
What are white blood cells?
They form part of the immune system that make antibodies and fight aganist infection
What are platelets?
They help clot the blood at site of a wound
What are arteries and explain now they work/are adapted to their function?
They carry blood away from the heart. They have thick walls made of muscle which makes them able to stretch back. By them having thick wall it helps withstand the high pressure.
What are capillaries? Explain their function and structure
Capillaries are very thin and walls are only one cell thick increasing the rate of diffusion
What are veins? Explain their structure and function
Veins have a thin wall as the pressure of blood is low. They also have values to control the directions of which blood flows.
Explain an advantage and disadvantage of a mechanical valve
An advantage is that it lasts a long time
A disadvantage is that it means you have to take medicine to prevent blood clotting around it
Explain the advantages and disadvantages of a biological heart valve
An advantage is that you dont need medication
A disadvantage is they last for only 15 years
How does an artificial pacemaker work?
An electrical device is placed inside your chest connected two wires to your heart that stimulate it to beat properly.
Name a disadvantage of having a pacemaker
You need regular check ups
What are alevoli?
The site of respiration
