B3.2 Plant Hormones Flashcards
positive and negative tropism
when a plant grows towards/away from a stimulus
phototropism
growing towards sunlight
more photosynthesis
gravitropism/geotropism
growing with gravity
positive(roots)-good anchor and can reach nutrients
negative(stem)-compete with other plants for sunlight
auxin
enables plant to grow towards/away from a stimulus
auxin in shoots exhibit growth
auxin in roots inhibit growth (lots of auxin=no growth)
auxin in phototropism
the sun breaks down the auxin so the auxin is more concentrated in the shade side.
the auxin exhibits growth so it grows on that side causing it to lean towards the sun
auxin in gravitropism
the auxin gathers at the bottom due to gravity
this causes the top side to elongate thus causing the roots to bend downwards
uses of plant hormones
auxin - elongate cells for bigger products
ethene - a gas that stimulates conversion of starch to sugar to ripen fruit
gibberellins - promotes growth to quicken production of a crop
killing weeds
auxin is used to make the weed grow too uncontrollably and die in the process
promoting root growth
auxin (rooting powder) is used to create identical plant with bigger root to be a better anchor and to get more nutrients
delaying ripening
auxin is used to delay ripening
promote ripening
ethene is used as it stimulates conversion of starch to sucrose
seedless fruit
if auxin is applied on an unpollinated plant, the plant will grow no seeds
control dormancy
you can wait until you want to grow it by using gibberellins and auxin
