B1.3 Respiration Flashcards
Carbohydrate
Glucose is used for energy
Amylase breaks starch into glucose
Protein
Used for growth and repair
Protease breaks protein into amino acids
Lipids
Store of energy, insulation, buoyancy
Lipase breaks lipids into 3 fatty acids and 1 glycerol
How is food getting into body cells
The digested food is absorbed into blood stream
ATP
An energy store produced in respiration
What is energy used for
Synthesising larger molecules
Movement
To stay warm
Anaerobic respiration
Cardiac output can’t meet oxygen demand so glucose is broken down into poisonous lactic acid which causes fatigue
Cons of anaerobic respiration
Produces less ATP
Lactic acid causes pain and fatigue
Oxygen debt needs to be repaid to fully break down glucose
Fermentation
Anaerobic respiration in microorganisms and plants
glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide
What type of reaction is respiration
Exothermic
