B1.1 Cells Flashcards
2 types of cells
Eukaryotic - contains nucleus
Prokaryotic - no nucleus
MRS GREN
Movement Respiration Sensitivity Growth Reproduction Excretion Nutrition
Cell membrane
Selective barrier
Contains receptor molecules
Vacuole
Cell sap that keeps cell upright and firm
Pili
Enables cell to attach to places
Used to transfer genetic material between bacteria
Slime capsule
Protects cell from dying out
Protects from poisonous substances
Allows to attach to smooth surfaces
Plasmid
Extra genes for stuff like antibiotics resistance
Resolution
Smalles distance between 2 points that can be seen as 2 different entities
Resolution of light microscope
2x10^-7
Stains
Methylene Blue - Nucleus of animal cell
Iodine - plant cell nucleus
Crystal violet - bacterial cell wall
How does light microscope work
Light passes through slide into objective lens then eyepiece lens
How to use light microscope
Stage Objective lens Slide Coarse focus Fine focus
How does a TEM work
Beam of electrons pass through sample and is focused to produce image
How does an SEM work
Beam of electrons scan across sample and the reflected electrons produce a 3D image
Light Microscope Pros and Cons
Cheap Portable Simple to use Natural colour Living or dead samples Relatively low resolution
