B3.1 The Eye Flashcards
Cornea
Refracts light into eye
Pupil
allows light to enter eye
Iris
muscle that alters pupil size, therefore controls amount of light entering eyes
Lens
Bioconvex; focuses light onto retina
Ciliary muslce
alters size of lens
contracts = fatten
relaxes = thin
suspensory ligaments
connects ciliary muscle to the lens
optic nerve
carries nerve impulses from photoreceptors to brain
retina
where photoreceptors receive light
focus on near objects
ciliary muscles contract
lens get fatter
focus on distant objects
ciliary muslces relax
lens get thinner
short sightedness
lens is too strong/eyeball’s too long
light meets before retina
concave lens bend light outwards for light to reach retina
long sightedness
lens is too weak/eyeball’s too short
light does meet at all
convex lens bends light inwards so it meets at retina
2 types of photoreceptors
rods - responds to light levels (black + white)
cones - responds to R/G/B light
