B2.8 Specification Flashcards
What’s a species?
A specific type of animal that reproduce to have fertile offspring
How is a species made?
Gene flow is isolated
Genetic differences start
Divergence
What’s evolution?
Slow change in living organisms along time
Natural selection
Evidence for evolution?
Fossils
DNA
Study amino sequences
Living organisms and relationships
How do you get fossils?
Die, hard parts don’t decay, sediment, rises years later
If one or more of the conditions needed for decay are absent then soft parts may be preserved
Traces of organisms can be preserved
Uses of fossils?
Change through time
Can try to date it to see which were around in a particular era
The position of a fossil in a rock layer give an indication about the age, oldest at the bottom
What’s speciation?
Forming of new species
