B2.2 - Tissues, Organs And Organ Systems Flashcards
What is the purpose of an organ system?
Exchanging and transporting materials.
What are similar cells working together called?
Tissues.
What is a group of tissues working together called?
An organ.
What does muscular tissue do?
Contracts/shortens to move whatever is attached to it.
What does glandular tissue do?
Creates and secretes chemicals e.g. enzymes and hormones.
What does epithelial tissue do?
Covers parts of the body.
What does muscular tissue do in the stomach?
Churns up the food.
What does glandular tissue do in the stomach?
Makes digestive juices to digest food.
What does epithelial tissue do in the stomach?
Covers the outside and inside of the stomach.
What is an organ system?
A group of organs working together to perform a particular function.
What does the digestive system contain? (5)
- Glands.
- Stomach.
- Liver.
- Small intestine.
- Large intestine.
What are the functions of glands in the digestive system?
To produce digestive juices.
What is the function of the stomach in the digestive system?
To digest food.
What is the function of the liver in the digestive system?
Produces bile.
What is the function of the small intestine in the digestive system?
To digest food and absorb food molecules.
What is the function of the large intestine in the digestive system?
To absorb water from undo heated food and produce faeces.
Name the organs in a plant. (3)
- Roots.
- Stems.
- Leaves.
What is the function of epidermal tissue in plants?
To cover the whole plant.
What is the function of mesophyll tissue in plants?
Where the photosynthesis occurs.
What is the function of the xylem in plants?
To transport water from the roots to the leaves.
What is the function of the phloem in plants?
To transport mineral ions and sucrose around the plant.
What occurs during the development of a multicellular organism?
Differentiation (cells become specialised).
