B18.4 Deforestation And Peatbogs Flashcards
What is deforestation ?
The removal of forest
What are some reasons for deforestation ?
Agriculture ( crops and food)
Expanding settlements
Mining for resources
What are the effects of deforestation ?
Habitat destruction
Landslides, soil less stable without roots
Increased CO2, less planes to photosynthesise and the wood that gets cut it typically burnt
What are peat bogs ?
Partly decayed plant material
Why do peat bogs happen ?
When decay cannot fully happen in acidic or waterlogged soils
There is too little oxygen for the decomposers to use
What is the result of peat bogs?
A rich carbon store of un decayed material
What can the result be used as ?
It can be burnt as a fuel or compost but:
It’s released carbon dioxide
Description of habitats( many species really on peat bogs)
What is human activity doing to biodiversity?
Reducing it
Why are humans reducing biodiversity ?
Land usage such as housing, airports, agriculture Etc
What is the issue with using peat free compost ?
It’s very expensive and would therefore make food more expensive
