B18.3 Air Pollution Flashcards
What causes acid rain ?
Sulfur dioxide
Nitrous oxides
Describe acid rain ?
Sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxides produced by factories ( acidic gases)
These are carried by wind and the gassed dissolve in rain
Precipitation ( acid rain containing sulphur and nitric acids)
What are the affects of acid rain ?
Weathering on limestone
Soil pH decreases and kills plants as a knock on affect
Water turns acidic therefore potentially killing sea life
What is smoke pollution ?
Formed from particulates released into the air
What is smog?
It is a combination of smoke and acid gases in the air
What are the effects of smoke pollution ?
Global dimming: blocking suns rays and making the world darker, respiratory diseases
