B1.5 Biomass Flashcards
What do the arrows represents in a food chain?
The flow of energy
What is the producer?
An autotroph- makes own food through photosynthesis
- green plants and algae
What is the primary consumer?
Herbivores that eat the producer
-e.g rabbits, cows, caterpillars
What is the secondary consumer?
Carnivores that eat the primary consumer
-e.g cats, lions, humans
What is a predator?
An animal that kills its food
- Secondary or tertiary consumer
What is prey?
Animals that predators feed on
What is an apex predator?
The predator that has no predators of its own
What is a scavenger?
An organism that eats already dead animals
-e.g hyenas
What is a decomposer?
An organism that eats dead or decaying organisms or the undigested plant and animal matter in faeces
What is a trophic level?
A hierarchical level in the food chain
Where does the energy from food go?
Faeces, urine, respiration and heat energy
What is an anabolic reaction?
A reaction where your body makes something
What is a catabolic reaction?
A reaction where your body breaks something down
Is a pyramid of biomass always useful
Yes
Is a pramid representing numbers always useful?
No
