B12 - Respiration Flashcards
What are the uses of energy in living organisms
- muscle contraction
- protein synthesis (growth and repair)
- cell division
- passage of nerve impulses
- maintenance of a constant body temperature
- active transport
What is aerobic respiration
A series of chemical reactions in cells that use oxygen to break down nutrient molecules to release energy
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water
What is the balanced symbol equation for aerobic respiration
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ —> 6CO₂ + 6H₂O
What is anaerobic respiration
Chemical reactions in cells that break down nutrient molecules to release energy without using oxygen
What is the difference between anaerobic and aerobic respiration
- Anaerobic respiration releases much less energy per glucose molecule than aerobic respiration
- you can only do anaerobic respiration for a short period of time as the build up of lactic acid causes fatigue and pain, aerobic respiration occurs all the time
- Aerobic respiration produces carbon dioxide and water, while anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid
- aerobic respiration completely breaks down glucose while in anaerobic respiration there is an incomplete break down of glucose
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in muscles during vigorous exercise
Glucose —> lactic acid
What is oxygen debt
It is when the lactic acid builds up in muscles and blood during vigorous exercise causing an oxygen debt
How is the oxygen dept removed after exercise
- continuation of fast heart rate to transport lactic acid in the blood from the muscles to the liver to be broken down
- continuation of deeper and faster breathing to supply oxygen for aerobic respiration of lactic acid
- aerobic respiration of lactic acid in the liver
Where in cells does aerobic respiration take place
The mitochondria
What type of reaction is respiration
Chemical, and exothermic
What are some of the ways to test for aerobic respiration
- A series of containers which you pull air through and remove all the carbon dioxide before it reaches the specimen
- a sealed tube, with lime water at the bottom and gauze to hold the specimen
