B10 + B11 Flashcards
Reaction time required practical outcome
Your reaction times increase when you are under the influence of caffeine.
Communication systems
Nervous and Hormonal
Negative feedback format
Stimulas - Receptor - Communication Pathway - Effector - Response
Homeostasis
keeping everything the same internally. Regulation of the internal conditions of a cell to maintain optimum conditions for function in response to internal changes
Rexlex actions
Blinking, Coughing, Knee jerk
What do relex actions do
Prevent harm to the body by responding rapidly to stimuli
Neurone in spine
Sensory and Motor neurone
Synapse
Junction between two neurones across which electric signals must pass
What are endotherms
Birds and mama.s which can regulate their own temperature
What are ectotherms
Needs the enviroment to survive, reptiles and amphibians
How does your eye focus on a near object
Cillary muscle contracts - suspensory muscle lossens - the lens become thicker and refracts light slowly
How to focus on a distant object
the ciliary muscle relax - the suspensory ligaments are pulled tight - the lens is then pulled thin and only slightly refracts light rays.
Myopia
short sightedness - you can see close objects well but long far objects will be blurred
How to treat myopia
To treat it you can wear glasses with concave lens’
Hyperopia
long sightedness - can focus clearly on distant objects but close objects appear blurred.
How to treat hyperopia
Wear glasses convex lenses
Hormone examples ( 5 )
Insulin Testosterone Oestrogen Advencliue Thyroxine
Pituitary use
controls growth in children, stimulates the thyroid glands to make thyroxine to control the rate of metabolism .
Thyroid use
Contols the metabolic rate of the body
Pancreas use
Contols the level of glucose in the blood
Adrenal use
Prepares the body for stressful situations -FIGHT OR FLIGHT
Ovaries use
Controls the development of the female secondary sexual characteristics, involved in menstrual cycle
Testies use
Contols the development of the male sexual characteristics involved in production of sperm
Type 2 diabetes in the uk percentage
90% of all cases in the uk.
What is Type II diabetes
Type two diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin to function properly
What is type one diabetes
Type one diabetes is where the pancreas produces little or no insulin meaning sugars and glucose cannot be used
What is adrenaline
not involved in a clear negative feedback system, your adrenal glands(top of your kidneys) secrete a lot of adrenaline that is carried rapidly round the body.
What does adreneline cause your body to do (5)
Heart rate and breathing increase
Stored glycogen in the liver to be converted to glucose for respiration
Mental awareness to increase
Pupils dilate to let more light in
Blood diverted away from digestive system , to big muscles
