B.1- cells and microscopy Flashcards
1
Q
eukaryotes
A
- all animals and plants
2
Q
prokaryote
A
- bacteria
- simpler
3
Q
animal cells
A
- nucleus (contains DNA, in the form of chromosomes)
- cytoplasm (where chemical reactions take place)
- mitochondria (site of cellular respiration- contains enzymes)
- cell membrane (holds cell together, selective barrier- receptor molecules used for cell communication)
4
Q
Plant cells
A
- rigid cell wall (made of cellulose- support for the cell)
- chloroplasts (where photosynthesis occurs, contains green substance named chlorophyll)
- permanent vacuole
5
Q
prokaryotic cells - features
A
- chromosomal DNA- one long chromosome, controls cells activity/ replication. Floats free in the cytoplasm.
- plasmids, small loops of extra DNA that aren’t part of the chromosome. contains genes for drug resistance etc.
- cell membrane- controls what goes in and out.
supported by a cell wall.
6
Q
light microscopes
A
- eyepiece lens, magnifies image
- objective lens, magnifies the image, normally three different lenses.
- stage, supports the slide.
- clip, holds the slide in place.
- handle, carry microscope.
- lamp, shines light, improves clarity.
- focusing knobs, move stage up and down.
7
Q
samples
A
- prepared using a drop of stain like eosin, methylene blue.
8
Q
equation
A
- magnification= image size / real size
