reproduction - mock 2022 Flashcards
1
Q
reproduction definition
A
- an organism made from another organism/ organisms. Defining characteristic of life.
2
Q
why is a virus not alive
A
- it can not independently reproduce/ needs a host cell.
3
Q
two types of reproduction
A
- sexual
- asexual
4
Q
asexual reproduction
A
- when 1 parent provides all of the off-springs genetic information, producing a clone.
- Mitosis
5
Q
Sexual reproduction
A
- when 2 parents fuse their genetic information together to create a unique off-spring.
6
Q
a species that can reproduce both ways?
A
- flowering plants
7
Q
gamete?
A
- the name given to sex cells, specialized cells that contain half of the chromosomes needed to make healthy off-spring.
8
Q
Human gametes
A
- sperm cell
- egg cell
9
Q
Plant gametes
A
- pollen
- ovum
10
Q
how are sex cells produced
A
- meiosis
11
Q
mitosis process
A
- chromosomes and cell organelles are copied
- chromosomes are pulled to either side of the cell opposite each other
- the nucleus/ cytoplasm and cell membrane divides
- two genetically identical daughter cells are produced
12
Q
Where are gametes made
A
- sperm cell = testes
- egg cell = ovaries
13
Q
meiosis
A
- cell division= mitosis- where the 46 chromosomes duplicate then divide. (not identical)
- after this you have the second division, where the chromosomes and cells divide again.
- 1 parent cell produces 4 gametes, 23 chromosome haploid cells
