B - Gyros (30/31-05-18) Flashcards
What is movement of gyro orientation called?
Wander
What is lateral/horizontal wander called?
Drift
What is vertical wander called?
Topple
What are gyros mounted on to provide axes of freedom?
Gimbals
How many gimbal rings are required to provide full freedom?
2 - 2 degrees of freedom
What is real wander?
An actual change in the orientation of a gimbal in space.
What causes real wander?
Manufacturing imperfections
Tie systems keeping the gyro in a particular axis (like horizontal to the earths surface)
What is apparent wander?
The effect off the rotation of the Earth causes a gyro to seemingly wander due to the observer rotating with the earth.
-ve in the N
+ve in the S
What is the equation for wander/earth rate drift?
ERdrift = 15sin(lat)
deg/hr
What is the equation for wander/earth rate topple?
ER = 15cos(lat)
deg/hr
What is Transport wander?
The wander that occurs due to an aircraft flying over the Earth.
What is a space gyro?
A gyro that is not tied on any axes (complete freedom)
What is a rate gyro?
A gyro that has 1 gimbal and so only 1 degree of freedom.
the force applied to the gyro from the fixed axis the processes and the rate of wander is measured.
What is gimbal lock?
Where 2 gimbal rings align themselves causing a degree of freedom to be lost.
What are the 2 types of power sources for a gyro and what are some benefits and drawback to each?
Pneumatic
Easy and cheap but less robust due to particles being able to enter system, and unstable spin speed
Electrical
Can spin faster and be sealed from atmosphere therefore lasting longer, with a stable spin speed
