Q

What is the purpose of the ring around the mast?

And why does it need grease?

A

They are droop stops,
stops the blades hitting the airframe at low RPMs
It needs grease because the blades rub on the ring during the control pre-flight check.

Q

How is the main transmission lubricated and cooled?

A

Internal oil system distributed by 2 oil pumps in the sump.
Passes through pressure relief and check valves.
Passes through a filter (with bypass)
Cooled by mechanically driven fan and oil cooler matrix.
Delivered via spray system to mast bearings, accessory and tail rotor drives, main rotor gears and input gearboxes.
