Autonomic Nervous system in head and neck Flashcards
what are the three regions of the cervical ganglia?
superior, middle and inferior
what is the term for the fused inferior ganglia of the cervical trunk with the T1 ganglia?
Stellate ganglia
where is the cervical ganglia located?
posterior to the carotid sheat - on prevertebral fascia
What are the surface markings for the internal jugular?
goes from TMJ to the SCjoint
what cervical nerves are considered part of the superior, middle and inferior cervical ganglia?
superior = C1, C2, C3 and C4
middle = C5, C6
inferior= C7, C8
what parasympathetics are associated with the occulomotor nerve?
parasympathetic branches from the edinger westphal nucleus
what parasympathetics are associated with the facial nerve?
branches from the superior salivatory nucleus
what parasympathetics are associated with the glossopharyngeal nerve?
those coming from the inferior salivary nucleus in the medulla
What parasympathetic fibers are associated with the trigeminal nerves?
All of them! - all parasympathetics hitch a ride on branches of the trigeminal nerve
Describe the parasympathetics that are responsible for the pupillary reflex
these parasympathetics come from the edinger Westphal nucleus travel with the opthalmic branch of trigeminal to the pupil
associated with the occulomotor nerve and the cilliary ganglia
Describe the parasympathetics associated with the pterygopalatine ganglia
the parasympathetics in the pterygopalatine ganglia come from the superior salivatory nucleus - nerve is the greater petrosal nerve
*follows the maxillary branch of trigeminal*
Describe the parasympathetics associated with the submandibular ganglia
parasympathetics come from the superior salivatory nucleus- through the submandibular ganglia and out to the salivary glands
They follow the mandibular branch of trigeminal
Describe the parasympathetics associated with the Otic Ganglia?
The parasympathetics (lesser petrosal nerve) come from the inferior salivatory nucleus, travel with the mandibular branch of trigeminal, then to otic ganglia- then to parotid
Describe the parasympathetic innervation of the cardiac myenteric ganglia
parasympathetics come from the dorsal motor nucleus - associated with the vagus nerve
Describe the sympathetic innervation of the head and neck
all sympathetics follow either internal or external carotid (more superior = internal, and more inferior = external)
all sympathetics come from superior cervical trunk (T1)
the only one that is named is the deep petrosal that is associated with the pterygopalatine ganglia
