Auto-immune diseases Flashcards
Auto-immunity
Presence of immune responses against self tissues.
Immune system looses its normal regulatory processes and perceives its own tissues as being alien. It forms antibodies against its own tissues (as though it were an external threat)
Auto-antibodies
Antibodies produced by the IS against the bodie’s own proteins
Attacks various organs and tissues causing inflammation and damage
Epidemiology
M/F, age
More common in women
Younger population
High titres of auto-antibodies are MORE/LESS harmful than low titres?
