Auditory pathway Flashcards
1st order neuron
Sensory neurons , bipolar in spiral ganglion
peripheral branches synapse with hair cells of organ of Corti
central branches follow cochlear nerve to cochlear nuclei
Sensory axons enter brain stem
at junction of pons and medulla
bifurcate
terminate in ventral and dorsal cochlear nuclei
2nd order neuron from Dorsal cochlear nuclei
axons to contralateral superior olivary nucleus
2nd order neuron from Ventral cochlear nuclei
axons to ipsilateral superior olivary nucleus
Superior olivary nucleus
Medial: processes time it takes for sound Lateral: processes intensity of sound via trapezoid body 3rd order neuron: forms lateral leminiscus terminate in inferior colliculus
4th order neuron from Inferior colliculus
neurons to medial geniculate body
5th order neuron from MGB
from MGB to auditory cortex(sup. temporal gyrus) (Br. 41,42)
runs in caudal limb of internal capsule
Sound attenuation reflex
Sound to ear - cochlear nerve - ventral cochlear nucleus - superior olivary nucleus - facial motor nuclei - facial nerve - stapedius mucle
