Attribution Flashcards
What is attribution?
The reasoning a coach or performer gives to explain the standard of their performance, either negative or positive
Basic model of attribution:
Outcome of event ->Available information->
Casual attribution->(expectancy)or(effective response)
-> Decision on participation
Wiener’s model (two groups)
Locus of causality: internal/external
Stability: Stable/unstable
Internal stable and unstable factors
Stable- Ability
Unstable- motivation
External stable and unstable factors
Stable- Task difficulty
Unstable- Luck
Attribution to success
- attribute to stable, internal factors
- Also controllable factors
Attribution to failure
- If improve confidence then external, uncontrollable, unstable factors (luck)
- If improve performance then unstable internal controllable factors (effort)
Self serving bias
Bias towards yourself or team. Failure to external factors and success to internal.
What is the third part in the revised model?
control, similar to internal/external
- however ability is uncontrollable and stable.
- However difficulty may be stable yet controllable (high jump)
What is learned helplessness?
- Idea within performer failure inevitable
- Low achiever will attribute to controllable
- High need to avoid failure (NAF)
What is mastery orientation?
- Motivated to achieve and become expert
- Persist despite failure
- High need to achieve (NACH)
- Low need to avoid failure
- More concerned with developing understanding
Attribution retraining
- Don’t attribute failure to unstable external (ref)
- Attribute to controllable unstable factors
eg. Rugby team encouraged to increase effort in defense
