Attachment
an emotional bond between 2 people, a two way process which progresses overtime and leads to certain behaviours
Care giver
a person who provides care for a child
interactional synchrony
when two people interact they mirror each others behaviour in terms of facial and body movement, as well as emotions
Reciprocity
responding to the action of another with a similar action, where the action of one partner elicit a response from the other partner
multiple attachment
having more that one attachment figure
primary attachment figure
the person that forms the closest bond with the child, this is demonstrated by the intensity of the relationship
separation anxiety
the distress shown by an infant when separated from a care giver
stranger anxiety
distress shown by an infant when approached or picked up by someone unfamiliar
imprinting
an innate readiness to develop a strong bond with the mother, this takes place during a specific time in development, usually just after birth
classical conditioning
learning through association, a neutral stimulus paired with an unconditional stimulus so that it eventually takes place on the response of the stimulus and is able to produce a conditioned response

the name given to a group of explanations (classical and operant) which explain behaviour in terms of learning rather than inborn tendencies or high order thinking

social learning theory
learning through observing others and imitating behaviours that are rewarded
continuity hypothesis
the idea that emotionally secure infants go on to be emotionally secure, trusting and socially confident adults
critical period
a biologically determined period of time in which certain characteristics can develop
