Attachment Flashcards
Attachment
emotional bond between two people
Infant-Caregiver Attachment
bond formed between a child and their primary caregiver in the first year of life
Psychoanalytic Theory
we become attached because feeding satisfies oral needs and is the foundation of later relationships
Behaviorism
we become attached because feeding relives hunger, thus creating a positive association with mother
What study disproved that attachment was not just about feeding?
monkeys were raised with 2 surrogate mothers (one fuzzy, one wire) where all monkeys ran to fuzzy mom when scared regardless of which mom provided food
Ethology
study of animal behavior and adaptive functions
Imprinting
rapid bond formation
What does imprinting say about attachment?
it may have a biological aspect
Bowlby’s Attachment Theory
attachment is adaptive, helps cope with threats, provides internal working model of relationships which serves as a basis for future relationships
How do we know an infant is attached?
separation/stranger anxiety, secure-base behavior, social referencing, greetings
Secure Attachment
infants will explore freely i caregiver’s presence and will get upset when they leave, and will by soothed by the return of their caregiver
Insecure-Avoidant Attachment
infant shows little-no distress when separated and will avoid contact upon return and will even have a more positive attitude towards strangers
Insecure-Resistant Attachment
REALLY distressed when separated, but cannot be soothed upon return
Disorganized/Disoriented Attachment
contradictory behaviors and dazed, fearful facial expressions with frozen postures
What causes differences in attachment style?
parental sensitivity
