What animals were used in Lorenz’s study?
Geese
Define Imprinting
An inherited trait that some animals use as a means of survival
What was the procedure?
Experiment where he randomly divided a large clutch of geese eggs - half hatched with the mother in their natural environment, half hatched in an incubator, where the first moving thing they saw was Lorenzo
What was the first conclusion?
Demonstsates imprinting - a natural instinct exhibited by many animals that are mobile from birth that provides a survival advantage
What was the second conclusion?
There is a ‘critical period’ - after 32 hours the goslings were very unlikely to imprint, the most probable time was between 13-16 hours old
What animal was used in Harlow‘s study?
Rhesus Monkeys
What was procedure 1?
Infant monkeys taken from mothers and raised in lab setting. Some monkeys raised in isolation from peers
What was the Findings 1?
Isolated Monkeys - disturbed behaviour, circling, blank storing, self-mutilation, stayed separate when reintroduced, some even starved to death
Non-Isolated Monkeys - social deficits + clung to cloth diaper
What was Procedure 2?
16 babies with wire or cloth mother. Cond 1 - wire provided milk, Cond 2 - cloth provided milk
