Atropine Flashcards
What is atropine
Muscarinic antagonist used in ophthalmic applications, organophosphate overdose, and in cases of bradycardia.
What does atropine block
DUMBBeLSS
Diarrhea, urination, miosis, bradycardia, bronchoconstriction, lacrimation, salivation and sweating
Does atropine block cns excitation
No
Nicotonic receptors do that
Why does atropine block bradycardia
Blocks action of the vagus nerve, which acts to decrease heart rate in the parasympathetic system of heart. Works to increase heart rate in cases of bradycardia
Atropine is also warranted for use in heart ___
Block
Side effects of atropine
Skin flushing, increased temperature, dry mouth, cycloplegia, disorientation, mydriasis
How does atropine cause skin flushing
Blocks m receptors on sweat glands
Resulting anhydrosis leads to hyperthermia to cool off the body. Causes reflex vasodilation in skin in order to cool off
How does atropine cause increased temperature
As a result of decreased temp bc blocks m receptors in sweat glands
Why get dry mouth with atropine
Decreases parasympathetic secretions
Why get cycloplegia with atropine
Drug inhibits ciliary contraction, and adequate refraction cant take place.
Why atropine cause disorientation
Crosses BBB can cause hallucinations espicially in elderly patients
What atropine cause mydriasis
Dilates pupil and is used in ophthalmic procedures
Also used to induce cycloplegia in ppl with malignant glaucoma.
IT IS CONTRADICTED IN narrow angle glaucoma
Blocks ach actions on circular pupillary sphincter contraction.
