Q

How does mass spectrometry work

A

-a sample is placed in to the spectrometer
- The sample is vaporised and then ionised into + ions
-the ions are accelerated, heavier ions move slower and are more difficult to deflect so each isotope is seperated
-The ions are detected on a mass spectrum as a mass to charge ratio.
- This will show the relative abundance of different isotopes and help is calculate the ar
