Atoms, Ions and compounds Flashcards
What is an isotpoe?
An atoms with the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons
What is a cation
+
What is an anion
-
Relative isotopic mass
The mass of an isotope compared to 1/12 of carbon 12
Relative atomic mass
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element compared to 1/12 of carbon 12
How does mass spectrometry work
-a sample is placed in to the spectrometer
- The sample is vaporised and then ionised into + ions
-the ions are accelerated, heavier ions move slower and are more difficult to deflect so each isotope is seperated
-The ions are detected on a mass spectrum as a mass to charge ratio.
- This will show the relative abundance of different isotopes and help is calculate the ar
