Atmosphere Flashcards
Static Pressure
ambient pressure, pressure exerted by the still airmass
Dynamic Pressure
0.5 (RHO)(V)squared, kinetic energy per unit volume of air.
Density Altitude
Pressure altitude corrected for temperature
How will a decrease in air density effect aircraft performance?
Lower air density will decrease both engine and aerodynamic performance.
Standard day conditions
29.92 in HG, 15C
Layers of atmosphere below 50,000 ft
Troposphere (SL to 36000), Tropopause (36,000-80,000), Stratosphere (36,000 up)
What is viscosity
A property of a fluid that measures its internal resistance to motion
How does viscosity change with temperature
An increase in temperature will increase viscosity
How does an increase in humidity effect air pressure and performance
As humidity increases air pressure decreases which in turn decreases performance
Bernoulli’s principle for subsonic flow
Since density is assumed to be constant at subsonic speeds, an increase in velocity will decrease the pressure of the air.
Kinetic energy
Energy of motion, 0.5 (Mass) (Velocity) squared
Potential energy
Energy that is stored based on position, arrangement, state, or substance, (Mass) (Gravity) (Height)
Indicated Airspeed (IAS)
Actual instrument airspeed indication
Calibrated Airspeed (CAS)
IAS corrected for instrumentation error
Equivalent Airspeed (EAS)
CAS corrected for compressibility effects.
