Asthma Treatments Flashcards
Triggers
Exposure to allergens, emotion, diet, cold air, exercise, pollutants, drugs (aspirin and beta blockers)
What is asthma
Airway hyper responsiveness, limitation and inflammation of the bronchioles
Salbutamol
Bronchodilator
Salmeterol
Bronchodilator (long lasting)
Ipratropium
Block m receptors Bronchodilator stops mucus secretion
Theophylline
Bronchodilator
Action of bronchodilator
Relaxes smooth muscles of the bronchioles and widens the airways
Where are alpha 1
Blood vessels
Where are alpha 2
Medulla oblong area
Where are B1
Heart
Where are B2
Lungs
Beclometasone
Prevent the anti inflam response
Sodium cromoglicate
Prevent the anti inflam response
Montelukast
Prevent the anti inflam response
B2 agonist side effects
Tremor, increase HR
How much of inhaler reaches lungs
If used properly, 50% in mouth 10% in lungs
Action of the steroid based treament
Reduce mucus secretion, cross the cell membrane as are lipid soluble and change the protein production so take a few days to work
Side effects of inhaled glucocorticoid steroids
Oral Candida albicans
Oral prednisolone
Steroid for acute asthma attack
Action of antimuscarinic bronchodilators
Block m receptors to inhibit bronchoconstriction
Action of cromones
Inhibit the release of histamines from mast cells, useful for when exercising
Nedocromil sodium
Cromone
Sodium cromoglicate
Cromone
Action of LeUKotriene receptor AntagoniSts
Stop the release of inflam cells and prevent constriction
Montelukast
LeUKotriene receptor AntagoniSts
Zafirlukast
LeUKotriene receptor AntagoniSts
What’s good about LeUKotriene receptor AntagoniSts
Good for children that can’t take steroids
Theophylline
Oral taken with b2 agonists or steroids, they block and enzyme PDE that causes the muscles to relax
Omalizumab
Antibody injected to prevent allergic asthma but very expensive
Treatment strategy for asthma
- Inhaled short term B 2 agonist
- Inhaled steroids
- Long lasting inhaled B2 agonist + increased dose of inhaled steroid
- Short and long B2 + inhaled steroid+ other e.g. ltr
- Oral steroids and immunosupressents
