asthma meds Flashcards
albuterol
short acting b2 agonist for smooth muscle relaxation
salmeterol
long acting b2 agonist for smooth muscle relaxation
inhaled corticosteroids
for long term control of asthma
beclomthasone, prednisone (oral) MOA
inhibit the synthesis of virtually all cytokines
ipatropium MOA
muscarinic antagonist. competitively blocks muscarinic receptors preventing broncho constriction
methylxanthine
theophylline - MOA
likely causes bronchodilation by inhibiting phosphodiesterase –> increasing cAMP levels
cromolyn
prevents the release of vasoactive mediators from mast cells
leukotriene antagonist
- zileuton MOA:
- montelukast, zafirlukast MOA:
- 5-lipoxygenase pathway inhibitor. blocks conversion of arachodonic acid to leukotrienes
- blocks leukotriene receptors
Ketotifen
Use for allergic conjunctivitis where a patient has more than 2 episodes per month. Mast cell stabilizer and h1 receptor antagonist and eosinophil inh.
Medication to be usedin a child with mild persistent asthma

Steroids are to be avoided if possibe in kids.
