Assistive Technology & Adaptive Equipment Flashcards
1
Q
Define assistive technology
A
- Any piece of equipment used to improve function in people with disabilities
2
Q
Define DME (durable medical equipment)
A
- MUST be medically necessary for funding
3
Q
Benefits of assistive technology/adaptive equipment
A
- Allows greater independence in ADL’s
- Prevents contractures
- Provides a variety of positions
- Reinforces normal alignment
- Increases socialization, improves communication
- Provides mobility & encourages exploration
- Enhances learning
- Safety in transportation
4
Q
Benefits of standing
A
- Facilitates head control
- Reticular & limbic systems are activated when upright
- Improves circulation
- Improves digestion
- Better visual awareness
- Improved socialization
- Weight bearing improves bone density in growing bones, introduce early
- In good alignment
5
Q
Precautions with adaptive equipment
A
- Need variety of positions
- Consider growth potential
- Not a substitute for dynamic treatment
6
Q
Effects of proper positioning
A
- Enhance awareness
- Improve motor function
- Improve respiration
- Improve swallowing
- Increase visual awareness
- Decrease abnormal reflexes
7
Q
Describe seating for task performance
A
- Need mobility while in stable seated position
- Stable, dynamic pelvis with shoulder mobility
- Forward trunk posture: head & shoulders in front of pelvis; feet in WB on the floor/knees over feet; stimulates vestibular & proprioceptive systems
8
Q
Wheelchair measurements for a proper fit
A
- Seat Height / leg length: heel to popliteal fold plus 2”
- Seat Depth: buttocks to popliteal fold minus 2”
- Seat Width: widest point of buttocks and hips plus 2 “
- Back Height: Just below inferior angles of scapula
- Arm rest height: Seat of chair to elbow plus 1”
