Tinel’s Test

Two-Point Discrimination Test
Sensory screening test
- applying pressure to fingertips with client vision occluded
- using commercially available disk or caliper with two tips spaced from 1-10 millimeter intervals
- responses to pressure indicate functional sensation as follows
* 1-5mm = normal
* 6-10mm = fair
* 11-15mm = poor
* one point perceived = protective sensation only
* no points perceived = absent protective sensation
Finklestein’s Test
Screening test
- to detect deQuervain’s tenosynovitis
- performed by having client grasp the thumb with the fingers into the palm of the hand then UDing the wrist
Positive test elicits exquisite pain along radial aspect of the wrist
Phalen’s test
Screening test
- detect irritation of median nerve at the wrist
- resting both elbows on the table & allowing the wrists to passively drop into complete flexion for one minute
Positive test: paresthesia/tingling in median nerve distribution

Froment’s sign
Screening test
- detect an ulnar nerve lesion
- client forcefully hold a piece of paper between thumb & radial side of proximal phalanx
Positive test: flexion of IP joint of the thumb to substitute for absence of abductor pollicis
Volumetric Displacement
Method to measure/monitor UE edema
- uses commercially-available water tank
- comparisons made between two hands
Steps:
- fill tank with water
- immerse hand & distal forearm into tank
- measure amount of water displaced after immersion
- not used with open wounds, external fixators, percutaneous pins, casts

- involves picking up small common objects one at a time & placing objects in a cup with and without vision occluded
