What is the definition of infertility?
Failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sex
What factors can help with conception?
Woman under 30 yrs
Previous pregnancy
Intercourse during 6 days before ovulation, esp. 2 days before
Woman BMI 20-30
Non smokers
Caffeine intake less than 2 coffees daily
No recreational drug
What gynaecological problems can cause infertility?
Hypothalmic:
- Anorexia/Bulimia
- Excessive exercise
Pituitary:
- Hyperprolactinaemia
- tumours
- Sheehan syndrome
What other problems can cause infertility?
Chronic renal failure
Testosterone secreting tumours
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, thyroid
Drugs such as OCP, depo-provera and explanon
What are clinical features of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?
Obesity
Hirsutism or acne
Cycle abnormalities and infertility
What are endocrine features of Polycystic ovary syndrome?
High free androgens
High LH
Impaired glucose tolerance
