Assessment - Block 3 Flashcards
Characteristics of Effective Critique: (8)
- Objective
- Flexible
- Acceptable (to the student)
- Comprehensive (have to focus on good and bad)
- Constructive
- Organized
- Thoughtful
- Specific
What is Critique?
How the information is delivered to student (feedback)
What is Evaluation?
Determination of student performance
What are the methods of critique: (3)
Instructor Lead
Written (formal grading)
Self-critique
Why is it important that a student be able to self-evaluate?
If they can critique their performance they know what they’re supposed to know, and the standards they’re being held to.
What are
Traditional
Authentic
Summative
Formative
Techniques?
• Traditional
o Testing: rote and understanding levels
o Rote questions
o Written, oral, observation
• Authentic
o Perform a task: application/correlation level
o Scenario based question
o Not necessarily an absolute answer
o Requires decision making and judgment usually
o Written, oral observation
• Summative o Formal o Documentation o Records a grade to evaluate performance o Written technique o AIMS : Tasking lessons sat or unsat
• Formative
o Informal
o Verbal
Three types of evaluation:
Oral Quizzing
Written Examination
Performance Examination
What is evaluation?
Defining, observing measuring or judging the learning (behavior change) that has taken place. We need to see if the student has met the requirements we have.
What is oral quizzing?
Measurement that determines knowledge
Non standardized process
( can be asked a variety of things, subjective to each person)
Immediate Individual feedback
Advantages of Oral Quizzing (3)
(i) Able to rephrase question to clarify quickly
(ii) Can seek-out and know what the student really knows (find weaknesses and strengths better than written exam)
(iii) Immediately can tell guesses
Disadvantages of Oral Quizzing (2)
(i) Time consuming
ii) No written record (have to base recall on memory
What are written tests?
Used to determine knowledge
Standardized
When written record of testing is desired
Advantages of Written Tests: (3)
(i) Less time consuming
(ii) Written record
(iii) Standardized process
Disadvantages of Written Tests (3)
(i) Unable to clarify question
(ii) Can not seek out weaknesses or strengths
(iii) Can’t not tell if things were guessed
Characteristics of a good written test: (6)
(a) Reliable – yields constant results
(b) Valid – measures what is intended to measure
(c) Usable – easy to give and take
(d) Comprehensive – must measure all areas
(e) Discriminates – detects small differences
