What does it mean to have an aircraft airworthy?
Conforms to the approved type design or certificate (manufactured specs)
Conforms to all inspections
Condition for safe operation
Maintenance and alterations are performed in accordance with 14CFR Pt. 21, 43, & 91
How does the aircraft show airworthiness? (11)
i) Proper documents
ii) Preflight inspection
iii) Proper inspections complete
iv) If placards are not legible it is unairworthy
v) MEL
vi) Airworthiness Certificate
vii) Radio License (if international)
viii) Registration (federal & state)
ix) Operating Handbook(POH)
x) Weight & Balance
xi) Any other supplemental documents such as GPS and avionics systems
Who is responsible for keeping an aircraft airworthy?
The owner of the aircraft
Who is responsible in determining if an aircraft is in an airworthy condition?
The pilot operating the aircraft
What could make an aircraft un-airworthy?
Not in proper condition
Broken wingtips
Engine failed
Aircraft Fire
How long is an airworthiness certificate valid?
Forever, and is only invalidated temporarily if the aircraft is in an un-airworthy state
What maintenance inspections need to be completed to keep an aircraft airworthy?
a) 100 Hour (if for compensation or hire) (rental is not needed)
i) Can be overflown by 10 hours but only for reaching closest inspection point
(1) Goes into the next 100 hours
(2) Annual can substitute for 100 hour
b) Annual (12 calendar months) 91.409
i) What is inspected
(1) Appendix D in Part 43 (look up)
(2) Return to service has to b granted by A&P with an IA (inspection authorization)
(a) Privileges of an IA in 14 CR Part 65
ii) Progressive Inspection is done by UND
(1) Phases in a 12 calendar month period that replace the annual
(2) Due to heavy use
(3) Four phase inspection cycle
(4) 50 or 60 hours between phase inspections
(a) Inspection Items
(i) 1. Fuselage, cabin, empnnage
(ii) 2. Engine , propeller
(iii) 3. Wings, Landing Gera
(iv) Engine, Propeller
(b) Routine items get viewed often and detailed inspection itesm are priority.

(1) battery must have 50% useful; Or
(a) not have over 1 hour of use continual
d) Transponder (every 24 calendar months)
i) 91.413
e) IFR ONLY (24 calendar months)
i) Static system 91.411
ii) Each altimeter 91.411

If we can fly with the item broken, what do we need to do prior to flight?
Placard that item appropriately and legible
Who can do preventative maintenance?
Private pilots are allowed and above (must have a cert)
