Reliability
rate at which assessment produces the same outcome every time. Consistent across many different test takers and test taking scenarios.
Norming Group
representative of test takers as a whole - group which test takers are graded against
criterion referenced test
measure performance as related to predetermined benchmark or criteria. compare test taker against set criteria, not other students.
standards based assessment
measure student performance against content standard as defined by grade level and subject
measurement error
all variations that impact an examinees performance i.e. testing conditions, behavior of administrator, emotional state of test taker, etc
validity
whether findings that assessment seeks to measure are accurate and backed by research and evidence. If test does not measure what it is supposed to measure it lacks validity
quantitative
how much, numerical data i.e. IQ
qualitative
quality, non numerical, i.e. interviews
norm referenced assessments
measure individual against a group of other test takers
achievement tests
measure what skills a student has mastered
aptitude test
measure learned skills, also aim to predict course of future learning i.e. SAT
Formal assessments
results are reported in percentile or percentage format i.e. unit test, EOC exams, standardized test
informal assessment
observation, portfolios, projects etc. ongoing and guide instruction
formative assessment
ongoing monitoring of student progress towards learning objectives. informal assessment, helps streamline innstruction
summative assessment
evaluate students learning after the end of a defined unit of study. compares student knowledge to initial learning objectives addressed throughout unit of study.
