Aspirin indications
ACS, Stroke, CVD, cerebrovascular, peripheral arterial disease, AF (when DOAC/warfarin C/I) to reduce thrombus, mild-to-moderate pain/fever
Aspirin MOA
Irreversibly inhibits COX, reducing production of thromboxane and arachidonic acid, reducing platelet aggregation
Aspirin side effects
GI irritation, GI ulcer, haemorrhage, tinnitus in high dose, aspirin overdose is dangerous
Aspirin C/I
Children under age of 16 due to Reye’s syndrome, third trimester of pregnancy , gout (can trigger acute attack), peptic ulceration
Aspirin interactions
Co-dynamic with other antiplatelets/anticoagulants
Maximum daily dose of aspirin for pain
4g in divided doses
GI complication risk factors
> 65, previous peptic ulcer disease, comorbidities e.g. CVD , Diabetes , other drugs with GI effects like prednisolone and NSAIDS
