Antimotility drugs indication
Diarrhoea normally in IBS
Viral gastroenteritis
Antimotility drugs indication
Loperamide, codeine
Loperamide MOA
Reducing peristaltic contractions, anal sphincter tone is increased, slower gut transit means more time for water absorption so harder stool.
Loperamide adverse effects
Constipation, abdominal cramping, flatulence
Ulcerative colitis and antimotility drugs
Not to be used peristalsis may increase risk of perforation
Antimotility warnings
Avoid in c diff, not to be used in dysentery (bloody diarrboea) as it signifies infection, its use increases risk of haemolytic uraemic syndrome
When to stop antimotility
Constipation, abdominal pain, more than 5 days
Antimotility counselling
Only helps symptoms not the underlying cause, stop if constipated/taking more than 5 days/ abdominal pain
