When should DRA antiemetics be used
Especially in reduced gut motility, nausea due to drugs like opioids or diabetic gastroparesis
DRA antiemetic MOA
D2 acts on CTZ the area that senses vomiting causing substances and dopamine is a important neurotransmitter in the gut as it promotes relaxation of the stomach and lower oesophageal sphincter and inhibit gastroduodenal coordination. They have a prokinetic effect, promoting gastric action.
DRA antiemetic Side effects
Diarrhoea, EPS in metoclopramide, dodmperidone doent as it does not cross BBB
DRA antiemetic problems
Avoid in young adults and children, avoid in those that have GI problems, Dopamine treatment for parkinsons
