aspirin Flashcards
1
Q
aspirin
A
- mild analgesic
- prevents stimulations of nerve endings at site of pain and inhibits release of prostagladins at site of injury
- anti-pyretic
- relieves flammatory response
- non narcotic
2
Q
mild analgesic
A
block sensation of pain at the source
3
Q
original development of aspirin
A
- hippocrates used chewing willow bark, which had salicylic acid as active ingredient
4
Q
what reaction synthesizes aspirin
A
a esterification reaction (condensation reaction)
5
Q
how is aspirin synthesized
A
- by reacting salicylic acid with ethanoic anhydride to produce aspirin and ethanoic acid
- mixture is warmed gently aspirin is isolated; chrystals form and then suction filtered and washed with chilled water
- aspirin is purified by recrystalizzation (impure chrystals are warmed in hot thanol; solution cooled and separated by filtration)
- melting point determination is used to determin the purity of the produced aspirin
6
Q
physiological effect of aspirin
A
- anticoagulant (reduces blot clotting)
- antipyretic
- anti-inflammatory
- prophylatic; taken to prevent, not in response
- however does have SYNERGIC effect
7
Q
modification of aspirin
A
- for absorbtion
- for distribution
- to increase bioavalibility, solubility has to be increased
- aspirin is reacted with a alkaline (NaOh or NaHCO3 to form ionic salt)
