Class
Analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antiplatelet
Mechanism of action
Decreases inflammation, dilates peripheral vessels, decreased platelet aggregation
Onset and duration
Onset: 15-30 minutes
Duration: 4-6 hours; anti platelet effects may persist 4-10 days
Indications
Mild to moderate pain or fever; prevention of platelet aggregation in ischemia and thromboembolism; All patients with acute coronary syndrome; symptoms of ischemic chest pain; unstable angina; prevention of MI or infarction
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to salicylates; GI bleed; active ulcer disease or acute asthma; hemorrhagic stroke; bleeding disorders; children with flu-like symptoms
Adverse reactions
Stomach irritation; heartburn or indigestion; nausea or vomiting; allergic reaction
Drug interactions
Decreased effects with antacids or steroids; increased effects with anticoagulants, insulin, oral hypoglycemics, fibrinolytic agents
How supplied
81mg tablets
Dosage and administration
Adult: Mild pain and fever: 325-650mg PO q 4 hours. ACS: 160-325mg PO chewable tablets
Pediatric: not indicated in prehospital setting
Special considerations
Give ASAP to patients with ACS; Not routinely used as analgesic In Prehospital setting
