Adsorbent, antidote
Mechanism of Action
Fine black powered with massive microscopic surface area that binds and adsorbs ingested toxins. Also has the ability to extract certain meds and chemicals as they are circulated near the digestive tract.
Onset and duration
Onset: immediate
Duration: continuous while in gastrointestinal tract; reaches equilibrium once saturated.
Indications
Many oral poisonings and medication overdoses
Contraindications
Corrosives, caustics, petroleum distillates, unprotected airway, intestinal obstruction
Adverse reactions
May indirectly induce nausea and vomiting
May cause constipation or mild, transient diarrhea
Drug interactions
Syrup of ipecac ( adsorbed by activated charcoal and will result in vomiting of the charcoal)
How supplied
25g (black powder); 25g/125 ml bottle; 50g (black powder); 50g/240ml bottleother sizes include 15g and 30 g bottles and squeeze tubes
Dosage and administration
Adult: 30-100g or 1g/kg
Pediatric(1 - 12): 15-30g or 1g/kg
Infant: 1g/kg
Special considerations
Pregnancy safety category C May be known as "AC" Relatively insoluble in water May blacken feces Does not adsorb all drugs And toxins (phenobarbital, aspirin, cyanide, lithium, iron, lead, and arsenic.)
