ASCENDING TRACTS Flashcards
What are the types of the tracts found in the spinal cord?
1.Ascending -carry sensory info to the CNS
2.Descending -carry motor info from the CNS
3.Intersegmental tracts-related to intersegmental reflex
What are the two categories of sensations of the ascending sensory pathways?
1.Conscious-referred to the cerebral cortex
2.Unconscious-referred to cerebellum
What are two ways of grouping conscious sensations?
1.Exteroceptive-to do with the external environment (detected by somatic receptors and telereceptors)
2.Proprioceptive -from within the body
Describe how ascending tracts are grouped?
1.Tracts of the posterior funiculus
2.Tracts of the lateral funiculus
3.Tracts if the anterior funiculus
Example of tracts of posterior funiculus?
1.Fasculus Gracilis
2.Fasculus Cuneatus
What sensory modalities are carried by tracts of the posterior funiculus?
Sensory modalities of :
1.Proprioception
2.vibration
3.Fine touch
4.Two point discrimination
5.Pressure
Describe the dorsal-column medial leminscus pathway?
REFER TO HANDOUT
Examples of tracts of the lateral funiculus?
1.Lateral spinothalamic tract
2.Anterior spinocerebellar tract
3.Posterior spinocerebellar tract
Where is the lateral spinothalamic tract located?
Medial to the anterior spinocerebellar tract
What sensory modalities does the lateral spinothalamic tract carry?
1.pain
2.Temperature-thermal sense
Describe the pathway of the lateral spinothalamic tracts.
REFER TO HANDOUT
Where is the posterior spinocerebellar tract located?
Lateral to the lateral corticospinal tract
Which tract carries the largest fibers in the CNS?
Poster spinocerebellar tract
Diameter of the posterior spinocerebellar tract?
20um
Describe the pathway of the posterior spinocerebellar tract?
