Define the Calvaria.
It the dome shaped part of the cranium that forms the superior ,posterior, lateral aspects as well as the forehead.
Define the cranial base?

Define a meatus?
A tubelike passageway
What are Sutures?
Connections between bones of the skull?
Which bone of the skull is not connected by sutures and how is connected to other bones?
Mandible
Via the temporomandibular joint
List of the cranial bone sutures
- Coronal
- Saggital
- Squamous
- Lambdoid
How are the sutures of the facial bones named?
Based on the name of the bones that are connected
How are skull bones joined at birth?
By membranes called fontanelles
What is a Fontanelle?
Areas of fibrous tissue membrane separating the bones of the calvaria.
What are the major fontanelles ?
Anterior
Posterior
Anterolateral(sphenoidal)
Posterolateral(Mastoid)
Function of Fontanelles?
To allow the rapid stretching and deformation of the neurocranium( as the brain expands faster than the surrounding bone can grow)
How many fontanelles are present at birth?
6
Describe the anterior fontanelle
Refer to handout
Shape of the Anterior Fontanelle?
Diamond or rhomboid
Where is the Anterior Fontanelle located ?
At the junction of the coronal, saggital and frontal suture.
In an adult what does the anterior fontanelle become?
Bregma
By what age would have the anterior fontanelle closed?
18 months
What three sutures make up the posterior fontanelle?
Saggital (anteriorly) and Lambdoid(posteriorly) on either side
Shape of the posterior fontanelle
Triangular
When does the posterior fontanelle begin to close?
During the first 2 to 3 months after birth
By which age do cranial suture start ossifying?
8yrs old
When does obliteration of the cranial sutures usually start?
Between 20 to 30 years, often before the age of 40.
Order of obliteration of the sutures?
First the coronal suture and then extends into the saggital and lambdoid sutures
After how long do fontanelles start to close
Anterior-12-18months
Posterior-6-8 weeks
Order of ossification of the bones of the skull?
Occipital, basisphenoid(body of sphenoid) then Ethmoid bone
List 15 craniometric points
Bregma,Porion,Lambda,Inion,Asterion,Glabella,vertex,Nasion,Orbitale,Prosthion,Inferior alveolar point,Menton,Asterion,maximal occipital point,Gonion
Where is the frontal bone located?
Anterior cranial fossa
What are the structural contribution of the frontal bone?
- Anterior Cranial Fossa
- Roofs of the orbits
- Anterior cranial fossa
Parts of the Frontal bone?
- Fronta Squama
- Supraorbital margin
- Glabella
Articulations of the Frontal bone?
- Coronal suture-with the parietal bones
2. Frontonasal suture
What are the sinuses and openings of the frontal bone
- Frontal sinus
2. Supraorbital Foramen
What is a supraorbital notch
An incomplete supra-orbital foramen
What are the marks of the frontal bone?
- Frontal squama
- Supra-orbital margin
- Frontal sinuses
What is the supra-orbital foramen for?
For passage of blood vessels of the eyebrows, eyelids and frontal sinuses.
What are sutural bones?
Tiny irregularly shaped bones that appear within sutures
Structural contribution of the Parietal Bone?
Superior and lateral aspects of the skull
Articulations of the Parietal Bone
- Coronal
- Sagittal
- Lambdoid
- Squamous
- Sphenoparietal
What attaches on the superior temporal line?
The temporal fascia
Angles of the parietal bone?
