Q

Why did the standard of living become worse for commoners towards the end of Henry’s reign?

A
  • War = inflation, poor economic situation
  • Due to the royal supremacy and greater availability of land some peasants were forced to pay rent, whereas others bought the land joining the ranks of the Yeomen.
  • Yeomen farmed for profit rather than for substinence, these changes were accompanied by an increased movement away from rural to urban communities as new opportunities opened up.

Q

Why did the North of England pose problems? How and when was this resolved - change over time.

A
  • North of England posed problems as it was so far from the government. After the pilgrimage of Grace Cromwell and Henry established the Council in the North as a permanent body in York that kept the north quiet - successful as the north did not rebel during the summer of rebellions in 1549.
