Returned some land to the crown, increasing finances as they had fallen to £25,000 per annum.

Used by Wolsey to increase cheap and fair justice, attacking the power of the gentry and the nobility.
Yes and No as it upset the nobility which was bad for Henry as he wanted to be popular but it also reduced their power and extended law over them.
What did Wolsey do in 1519 to increase his own power?
Replaced some members of the Privy Council with his own supporters as it was an area of government he did not have control over. They quickly regained their positions however.
What 3 events happened in 1521? How did they increase Royal Authority?
1 ) Public burning of Lutherian texts to control the spread of protestants - Increases Royal Authority as Henry controls his people religiously.
2) Henry made Defender of the Faith - Increased Royal authority as it fulfilled Henry’s aim of international recognition.
3) Duke of Buckingham executed - Did not increase Royal Authority as this was Wolsey picking off his enemies in court.
What did Wolsey do in 1522 and 1523 to raise money for wars? How did this increase RA?
Used forced loans.
Used on the nobility which showed Royal control over them.
What happened in 1525 that decreased Royal Authority?
The Amicable Grant, Wolsey claims a ‘benevolence’ on the population to raise money for war without Parliament. It results in an uprising in East Anglia - decreases RA
What did Wolsey do in 1526 to consolidate his power?
Eltham Ordinances. Wolsey secured a reduction in the number of gentlemen of the Privy Chamber (under the guise of reducing government expenditure) he also replaced the Groom of the Stool with a more competent one. - Henry Norris
Increased RA as it reduced spending but was mainly due to Wolsey’s pursuit of power.
What did Wolsey do in 1528?
Removed 8 unsuitable monastic heads.
What happened in 1528 as a result of Wolsey’s foreign policy?
Trade Embargo failure results in widespread unemployment and inflation.

These were ALL religious changes that BENEFITED Henry to some degree or were part of his will, such as reasserting catholic doctrine.

1536 - Act of Ten Articles
This is evidence of Cromwell pushing for more radical religious changes - something that Henry did not want.
What Act was passed in 1536 concerning Wales?
Law in Wales Act.
It divided Wales into shire counties which operated on the same basis as their english counterparts. Allowed for Henry to exercise Royal Authority over hard-to-reach areas.
What was re-established in 1537?
The Council of the North in York as a result of the pilgrimage of grace.
What is important to remember about all of Henry’s ministers?
