16
Q

On the HF radio at the student’s stations, selection of the LSB and Maritime Radio-Telephone operation results in what?

A

The LSB and Maritime Radio-Telephone operation are disabled.

Instead, they connect to USB and A3J modes when selected.

17
Q

On the CT-142, the volume control is set to what? What does the HF audio output control?

A

Mid range

The output level

18
Q

On the CT-142, if the volume control is set too high what can happen?

A

It can overpower the coupler and affect transmission

19
Q

On the CT-142, the squelch control does what? What is the 402 procedure?

A

Adjusts threshold of received signal (reduce static)

Turn Squelch off.

20
Q

What are the possible selections for the Emission Mode Select? What is the default?

A

LSB, USB, AM

Set to USB

21
Q

On the CT-142, what does the Frequency/ Channel control do?

A

Used to selected frequencies and channels

22
Q

On the CT-142, the Memory Storage Button has what two functions?

A

Used to select one of 19 reset channels

Used to remove error messages

23
Q

How do you know if the radio is tuning?

A

‘TX’ is flashing

24
Q

How many people can have control of the HF at a time? How do you know if you have control?

A

1 person at a time

You know you have control if the CDU panel will be illuminated

25
Q

What are the steps to tuning the radio?

A

Take control of HF radio
Adjust volume and squelch
Set desired frequency: Push freq selector knob, rotate it until desired digit displayed, push knob again to switch to the next
number you wish you change.
Once desired freq is displayed, select HF on ICS panel, key mic once and wait until TX stops flashing.
Once flashing stops, transmit a message

26
Q

If unable to tune radio, what are the trouble shooting steps?

A

Change volume setting, put back to mid range
Recycle power (on/off)
Have another station take control of HF
Have pilots take control of the HF, then take back after two minutes

27
Q

What is SELCAL and why is it important?

A

Stands for selective calling.

Each AC is assigned a four letter code, when the ground station xmits this code, a light on the CELCAL panel will illuminate and the crew will get a tone through their headsets.

Allows crew to monitor HF radio w/o having to listen to static or chatter that isnt relevant to your AC

28
